Earning vs. allowance — which is which?
- Allowance is a base payment for being part of the family — it teaches budgeting and consistency. Most US families pay $1 per year of age per week as a starting point.
- Earning is what they make above the base — from extra chores, neighbor work, side hustles, or part-time jobs. The earning is where the entrepreneurial muscle gets built.
- Most families do both. Allowance covers the basics; earning covers everything they actually want.
- Saving 50% of all earned income is a habit that compounds for life. The kid who saves half of what they earn at 12 will likely save half of every paycheck at 32.
